Conference on New Approach to Risk Management
Mr. Saade Chami attended on October 29, 2009 a conference on New Approach to Risk Management in light of the global financial crisis. The conference was organized by "Al Bank Wal Mustathmar Group". In the opening session, the governors of the central banks of Turkey, Syria, and Lebanon made presentations focusing on the measures adopted in their own countries in the past few years.
Mr. Chami participated in the session on "Lessons Learnt from the Financial Turmoil" with the Vice Governors of the Central Bank of Lebanon, Mr. Samuelian, the CEO of Doha Bank, and the CEO of Qatar International Islamic Bank. His presentation was basically based on work done at the Fund (mainly by RES and MCM) but added a few slides regarding the lessons for the region. He suggested that a regional board of banking supervision departments be formed. The objectives of setting such a board is to discuss common issues, detect potential problems, improve regional coordination between members, and establishing ex-ante rules governing cross borders supervision as well as burden sharing and resolution.
